As the light started filtering through the curtains, Wilom finally looked up. His notebook had been new last week, but now he had less than 10 pages left. And he’d only read half the ledger. Continue reading “Yet Another Ledger”
The Second Folder
The Heads’ meeting was held in a moderately well-kept warehouse on the other side of the city. Wilom was starting to suspect that nobody he knew actually did business in sensible places, like offices, and realised just how much that said about his life choices. Vanda left him outside the door, and went in to make her case to them. Continue reading “The Second Folder”
Tea and Coffee
Wilom had honestly hoped that Vanda’s meeting with the Heads might have been moved forward, so that he didn’t have to wait another day to see her. Even if it was just to have a cup of tea and listen to her complain, he would have welcomed the company. Continue reading “Tea and Coffee”
Wisdom
Vanda didn’t appear the next day, but the day after. She found Wilom in their usual tea shop. In a moment, they were above ground, then there was a brief impression of the city, and then the countryside. They weren’t walking for very long before they arrived at the lighthouse. Vanda pulled Wilom around the side of the tower, and suddenly they were standing in the lighthouse keeper’s living room, where he was just putting on the kettle. Continue reading “Wisdom”
Breaking News
Vanda took Wilom immediately to the little run-down shack where the people from the tunnels were currently living. It was larger than Wilom had expected – he had expected a decrepit farm house, but this actually seemed to be an old barn or storehouse. Through the window, he could see fluttering fabric. A makeshift curtain. Continue reading “Breaking News”
Mistakes
Vanda dragged Wilom by the hand, a little faster than probably necessary. Wilom had to jog to keep up, feeling the blood pulsing in his fingertips from her grip. Continue reading “Mistakes”
Incitement
The morning passed quietly. Wilom once again had the house to himself, and he put off leaving the kitchen bench and the cup of coffee Marc made for him for as long as possible. When he finally worked up the energy to leave the house, he found that Vanda was waiting for him. Continue reading “Incitement”
Resolutions
When Wilom woke up the next morning, Jilli and Marc were playing with toys in the living room. He poured coffee from the pot Marc had left out and watched them for a moment, until Marc looked up. Continue reading “Resolutions”
Missing
In the morning, Cathlin seemed to have forgotten their awkward conversation, or at least had not held Wilom’s answers against him. Continue reading “Missing”
Enveloped
The letter came in the morning, in a delicate, scallop-edged envelope that made Marc raise an eyebrow and Cathlin assert that Wilom’s secret admirer must be terribly old-fashioned. Continue reading “Enveloped”
